BC Hydro battery incentiveFunding for eligible businesses

Looking for help with the cost of a commercial battery? BC Hydro’s Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) may support eligible new business battery storage systems, also called BESS. Check the electricity account, site and program obligations before purchasing.

Up to80%

Eligible project cost ceiling

The actual incentive is the lowest of three program limits. Approval and a 10-year service commitment are required.

WHAT YOUR BUSINESS COULD GAIN

An energy investment with a clear purpose.

Support for upfront costs

An approved incentive can help offset eligible battery project costs.

Manage peak demand

Battery storage may help manage demand charges. Savings depend on your load and tariff.

Plan for essential backup

A suitable system can support selected equipment during an outage. Reserve, duration and switching need assessment.

IS YOUR SITE A POSSIBLE FIT?

Start with these eligibility basics.

Commercial battery storage, industrial peak demand management and agricultural energy storage are useful starting points. Your rate, location and site load determine eligibility—not your industry name alone.

Business electricity rate

A qualifying general service or irrigation rate, in BC Hydro’s integrated service area; not a residential account.

A new, eligible system

Already purchased or installed batteries are not eligible. Equipment and interconnection must meet program requirements.

At least 25 kW nominated

The capacity offered to BC Hydro must be supported by the site’s qualifying winter demand.

10-year participation

Automatic dispatch and year-round performance obligations apply. Early exit or underperformance may require repayment.

A non-exporting battery

ESI requires non-exporting operation. Electricity export credits are a separate matter and must not be assumed as an added ESI benefit.

Metering and connection

An operating smart meter, required interconnection approvals and compatible control connectivity are needed.

A starting checklist, not an eligibility decision. BC Hydro’s current rules and your agreement govern.

HOW MUCH FUNDING?

Three limits. The lowest sets the incentive.

  1. CA$10,000 × nominated kW
  2. CA$10,000 × nominated kWh ÷ 4
  3. 80% of eligible project costs

Before buying a battery, check the application sequence.

01

Identify the offer

Business ESI differs from solar-and-battery rebates and federal tax credits.

02

Check the site

Confirm the tariff, nominated capacity, connection and operating obligations.

03

Confirm approval first

Follow BC Hydro’s current application process before purchasing or installing.

JC Smart Power can coordinate customer information and professional project support. BC Hydro determines eligibility, approval and the applicable agreement.

PROJECT SUPPORT

A clear route from first discussion to project scope.

01

Understand your goals

Tell us the site location, business type and whether cost management or backup is the priority.

02

Review the opportunity

We coordinate a review of the relevant electricity use, site conditions and potential program fit.

03

Clarify the project

Compare suitable options and confirm assessment, application and installation responsibilities before proceeding.

JC Smart Power provides independent project support. BC Hydro administers the program and determines incentive approval. Engineering, installation and maintenance responsibilities are confirmed in the project scope.

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS

The questions to settle before you commit.

Is this the BC Hydro battery rebate I have heard about?

You may mean the business Energy Storage Incentive (ESI), or the separate solar-and-battery rebate. ESI is for eligible business battery projects with an operating commitment. It is not a general household rebate. We first identify which offer matches your account.

Can I buy the battery first and apply later?

Do not assume so. The ESI offer excludes batteries already purchased or installed. Confirm eligibility and the required approval sequence before committing.

Will a battery lower my business electricity bill?

It may help with peak demand charges, but the result depends on your load, tariff, system design and operating obligations. An incentive is not a savings guarantee.

Can it keep my factory, cold store or supermarket running in an outage?

Selected loads may be supported by an appropriately designed system. Confirm the essential equipment, reserve, duration and switching requirements; whole-site or uninterrupted backup is not assumed.

Does ESI also pay me for selling electricity to the grid?

ESI supports demand flexibility through a non-exporting battery. Any solar export arrangement requires a separate eligibility and tariff review.
